World Cup Soccer

Europe was gripped by world cup soccer fever while we were there - indeed we seemed to follow it around.

In England every car (it seemed) had at least one if not two flags, people walked around with flags drapped over their shoulders, stalls sprang up, where no stall existed before, covered in flags, stickers, fridge magnets, mugs and other "tat". We were walking through a town when England was playing and every time something happened in the game you heard the roar from the pubs. We watched BBC prime most nights and they had a soccer round up at 11.30pm every night. On the morning of the quarter final, the morning TV show had recipes that could be prepared before the game, cooked while the game was on and consumed after the final whistle.

In Scotland it was almost the exact opposite, they were more interested in the Rugby trinations games than anything to do with soccer. As you approached the Scottish/English border we started to see the mad, flag adorned cars reappear.

Then off to France. Portugal/France semi final was great, this was an evening match and the street erupted at 10.30 with car horns playing the French National anthem as they careened down the road, flags attached to people hanging out doors of same cars. Flags hung from balconies and people walking arm in arm and singing. I think the French won. The next day we were heading off to Disneyland when I realised I was wearing a hat from Positano, I took it off before I started any soccer wars between France and Italy.

Obviously if I was a boy, the details here might be more technical!

Of course the final was played on the afternoon that we flew to Singapore, while we had all sorts of technology on the plane, such as film and canned tv shows, games and interavtive options, live TV was not one of them (believe it is coming to Singapore Airlines this month!) we were told before we disembarked that Italy had won, the people let out a collective sigh.
